A practical guide for final-year students
19 real job roles — what each one actually does, the exact tech stack to learn, what freshers get paid, and the first step to take this week.
The career map
Every branch below is a domain; every leaf is a real job with its own page — what it is, the day-to-day, the exact stack, fresher pay and a first step.
You, after BCA
6 domains · 19 roles — pick a branch, open a role
01 · Domain
Building the products themselves — web, mobile and games. The largest hiring pool, and where most BCA graduates start.
02 · Domain
Making sure what ships actually works. The most underrated entry route into a product team.
03 · Domain
The machines, networks and pipelines everything else runs on. Strong salaries, and demand keeps outrunning supply.
04 · Domain
Defending systems and attacking them with permission. Needs real networking and OS fundamentals first.
05 · Domain
Turning raw data into answers, predictions and pipelines. Heavy on SQL, statistics and Python — light on UI work.
06 · Domain
Owning the data layer itself. Fewer openings than dev, far less competition, very stable careers.
Self-assessment
Read all six. Pick the one that sounds most like you — no scoring needed.
Still torn between two? Open both role pages and compare the “what you actually do all day” lists. Pick the one that sounds least boring on a Wednesday afternoon.
Salary comparison
Indicative first-job ranges in India, 2026. Hover a bar for details, click a role to open it.
First-job range, ₹ lakh per annum
City
Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune pay noticeably more than tier-2 cities — but remote roles are closing that gap.
Company type
Product companies and funded startups start higher than service companies and agencies.
Proof of work
A deployed project, an internship or real freelance clients beat marks on a certificate.
Communication
Freshers who explain their work clearly get offered more, every single time.
Ranges are indicative for Indian freshers in 2026, not promises — they move with city, company and what you can show.
Universal skills
Whatever you pick, these are non-negotiable — start them this month.
Git and GitHub
Branches, merges, pull requests. Every team on earth uses it, and your GitHub is half your resume.
SQL
Joins, group by, subqueries, indexes. Asked in interviews for dev, data, QA, security and DBA roles alike.
Linux and the command line
Navigate, edit, permissions, logs, SSH, a little bash. Servers do not have a start menu.
Problem solving
Arrays, strings, hash maps, recursion, basic complexity. One hour a day beats a weekend binge.
Communication in English
Writing a clear bug report, explaining a design, replying to a client. This is the biggest fresher differentiator.
Using AI tools well
Ship faster with them, but be able to explain every line you submit. Interviews now test exactly that.
None of these six is tied to a framework, so none of them expires.
12-month roadmap
A realistic plan if you are starting from “I know some basics”.
Month 1 – 3
By month 3: A GitHub with commits on most days
Month 4 – 6
By month 6: Two working projects in one track
Month 7 – 9
By month 9: One live project and a clean resume
Month 10 – 12
By month 12: Interviews, offers or a paid internship
The one rule: do not switch tracks in month 5 because a YouTube video said the other one pays more. Twelve honest months in one lane beats four abandoned starts.

A certificate opens a screening filter. A deployed project opens the conversation. Where you can only afford one, build the project.
Start this week
None of them cost money. All of them are worth more than another certificate you never finish.
A BCA degree gets your resume read. A portfolio gets you hired.
Nothing is a silly question. Bring any of these — or whatever is worrying you about after college — to your mentor in the next class.
This guide covers 19 roles across 6 domains: Development, Quality & Testing, Infrastructure & Ops, Security, Data & AI and Databases. Each role has its own page with what the job is, the day-to-day work, the tech stack, fresher pay in India and a first step.
The roles with the highest demand on this page are Backend Developer, Cloud Engineer, Cybersecurity Analyst, Data Analyst and Data Engineer. Each one lists the skills to learn and a first step you can take this week.
